General Gomez was but one brand of Auburn’s hometown cigars

 

(Auburn Journal) ... But it was more than that; gentlemen of all stripes were apt to light up on a regular basis.
That was a good thing for Robert Wise, who was one of several cigar makers in Auburn. Wise had learned the art of cigar making in his native Prussia before coming to town in the 1880s.
He started out working for Henry Noosenhoener making Golden Crown Cigars, and when Noosenhoener died, Wise opened up a small cigar shop and factory in Old Town near where the California Club is today. That was in 1892. Continued
