North Central Connecticut Tobacco Farms Spared Major Storm Damage


(Patch) Farms of all kinds - whether vegetable, nursery product farms, orchards, forage, tobacco or others - face the same blights and unpredictable weather of New England each year; and with the arrival of this week's hurricane, growers of Connecticut's shade tobacco, renowned worldwide by high-end cigar makers, had to do a bit a preparation.
The six- to seven-week tobacco process is affected by all sorts of variables, such as humidity, mold, bacteria and bugs. Every possible precaution is taken each season, but Mother Nature sometimes forces these growers to hustle. Imperfect, creased or bruised leaves mean a loss of livelihood. "Hail" is a dirty word to tobacco farmers, as is "hurricane." Continued
