Congress To Ban Tobacco Sales To Our Military?

 

(Forbes) According to a recent letter to the Secretary of the Navy from Senate Defense Appropriations Committee Chairman Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Sen. Jack Reed (D -RI), a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, smoking rates in the military are running 10 percent higher than the general population.
Durbin and Reed, along with two other members of the Senate, sent the letter in support of a proposal to ban the sale of tobacco products—including cigarettes, cigars and chewing tobacco—on military bases and ships.

Now, despite the fact that Americans back home who are 18 years of age or older have the right to purchase a pack of cigarettes, a cigar or chewing tobacco at a store near you, the Pentagon and Congress are considering a ban on the sale of these products to those who have volunteered to fight America’s wars.
