After 150 Years FX Smith's Sons Cigars Go Online

(Firecured) FX Smith's Sons is one of the few remaining old-timey cigar manufacturers left in the United States. Located in McSherrystown, Pennsylvania (near Hanover), the company has been producing cigars for over 150 years. Soldiers, from both sides, procured cigars from Smith's shop on their way to the big fight at Gettysburg.
While the company manufactures the widely available Topper and Muniemaker brands, cigars under their own label have been very difficult to find. But the old dog learned a new trick and has opened an online store featuring such venerable names as Tuscarora and Lord Baltimore.
The cigars are machine made and quite tasty, many made with Pennsylvania broadleaf tobacco grown locally by the region's Amish farmers.
Like our nation's other remaining cigar makers, such as Finck and Avanti, Smith's cigars have a flavor all their own. Says the site: "wrappers are naturally air cured in tobacco barns, not fermented in piles, to achieve that natural all-American tobacco flavor loved by American cigar smokers for 150 years."
Most of the cigars are all tobacco, though the cheaper varieties have homogenized wrappers and/or binders. I assume they are all short filler, which is reflected in their prices - averaging 50 bucks for a box of 50. They make a great all-day smoke. 4-pack samplers can be had for a mere ten dollars.
As a longtime F.X. Smith fan, I've been hoping they'd get online and am overjoyed that they've made the jump to the 21st Century, here's hoping they make it another 150 years. Link FX Smith's Sons
