Re-Introducing Mac Baren HH Pipe Tobacco

(tobaccopipes.com) ... In 1887 Harald Halberg purchased the Svend Bonneclyckes Tobacco Spinning Mill in Svendborg, Denmark. The company continued to manufacture tobacco related products under the name of Harald Halberg’s Tobaks and Cigar fabrik.
Through the 20th century, the Halberg family owned company evolved over and over again until finally it reached its current style of tobacco production.
Jorgen Halberg, a member of the “royal” Halberg tobacco family became landlocked in America in the 1940’s, unable to be transported back to Denmark during WWII. While stuck, Jorgen went to work in various American tobacco facilities and to learn all he could from their unique style of production. Continued

Cigar Review: MBombay Mora

(Toasted Foot) Rarely do we ever review the same blend in multiple vitolas, unless there is something that warrants a later review of a different size. Yet, the MBombay Mora is such a wonderful cigar, that when Mel Shah of Bombay Tobak gave us the opportunity to try the entire MBombay line, it was readily apparent that this was a cigar of such complexity and quality that it deserved a little special treatment. So, for the first time ever we are reviewing each vitola in the line. Continued

Napoleonic imperial tobacco

(Dutch Pipe Smoker) One of the most remarkable episodes in the history of the use of tobacco in the Netherlands is no doubt the period when the entire tobacco-trade and manufacturing was declared a state-monopoly by order of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. The story goes that at a ball Napoleon saw a lady who wore the most magnificent and expensive jewels. He asked who she was and it turned out to be that she was the wife of a tobacco-merchant. The emperor exclaimed in amazement: “What a lot of money that man must earn!” This reaction is said to have resulted in the imperial decree of 29 December 1810, which introduced the tobacco-monopoly in France. This led to the decree of 26 December 1811 which introduced and finally settled the state-monopoly of tobacco in the Netherlands. Continued

Trinidad Lost Blends Now Found in Stores

(Halfwheel) It may be called a lost blend, but the latest release from Altadis USA’s Trinidad brand can now be found on retailer shelves.
The Trinidad Lost Blends was announced in late February as a limited release that had been tucked away in the company’s cedar room. It uses a Java Island shade grown wrapper, a Dominican Olor binder, and a filler blend of Dominican Olor, Dominican Piloto and Connecticut broadleaf tobaccos. Continued

Days Gone By: Cigar Factory in River Falls

(Riverfallsjournal.com) In 1886, two investors from Cumberland, H.F. Flesher and M. Miller, were in River Falls surveying the possibility of establishing a manufacturing concern that was new to the city.
They made arrangements with G.R. Griffin to rent his new building on North Main Street for use as a cigar factory. H.F. Flesher & Company, as the new business was called, began production around July 15 of that year. Continued

Cigar Review: La Flor Dominicana Texas Cigar Festival (2015)

(Halfwheel) ... The La Flor Dominicana cigar features a deep, dark brown wrapper that is extremely soft and oily to the touch. It’s quite firm with just enough give and has a wonderfully seamless application of the wrapper. There isn’t much aroma off the wrapper, just a minor wet barnyard note. The cold draw however is much more intriguing, starting off with a kind of root beer aroma, then shifting to a chocolate, vanilla, rich fruits and black pepper profile. Continued

Gayl Liebman: An Award-Winning Pipe Smoker

(Smokingpipes.com) ... A pipe smoker for almost 50 years, Gayl was inspired by her grandfather. She recalls that he often smoked a pipe with Granger tobacco, a commercial blend available in any Walgreens back then. Her first pipe was a heavily lacquered Dr. Grabow filled with what was, at the time, a small tobacconist's best-selling blend: Wine Cured #9. Continued

A Nordic Cigar Comes To IPCPR

(Cigar Aficionado) A new line from Las Cumbres Tabaco brings smokers closer to their inner Nordic deity with the Freyja brand. Named after the Norse goddess of love, war and fertility, the new cigar is composed of a Dominican Criollo '98 wrapper, a Mexican San Andrés binder and filler from the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. Geeks Freak on Perique

(Talking Tobacco) ... Every year when they process Perique, they bring in tobacco from four different sections of the “Golden Triangle” in St. James Parish and they mix the leaf together before putting it into barrels. Mark had the idea a few years ago to make barrels of Perique using tobacco from the individual regions, rather than mixing it, just to see what the differences were. He told me that he was surprised at how different the tobacco smelled and tasted, even though the amount of land that Perique is grown on is rather small and close together. Continued

Where to Smoke: The Robusto Room, Colorado

(Cigar Aficionado) If you've been pining to smoke your sticks way out in the sticks, Lone Tree might be the place for you.
Whoever named this sleepy suburb, 30 minutes south of Denver's skyscrapers, knew what he was talking about. Take a peek in any direction: there's about one lone tree. And at the heart of the town's retail cluster, tucked amid a smattering of nondescript storefronts, across from a cineplex and next to the obligatory tattoo parlor, is The Robusto Room, an uncommonly fine refuge for cigar lovers. Cigar Review: Cesar Habano Lancero (Prerelease)

(Halfwheel) ...  From the foot I get a fairly dry profile marked by peanuts, woods, and leather, with a touch of pepper in the mix but seeking it out too aggressively seems to have the same effect as it being there in the first place. The second cigar also had a sweet barnyard note that added to the complexity and made it that much more appealing. The cold draw is easy and a bit more complex and subtle, taking many of those same notes, blending them together and lettering them simmer and mesh, with the peanut the first to stand out. Continued

Pipe works: Q&A with local pipe-tobacco connoisseur

(news-record.com) Comic book fans know Greensboro’s Jim Amash as a working artist and historian of the medium, but in recent years he has made a name for himself as a pipe-tobacco connoisseur. He recently took a break from inking “Sonic Universe” and Archie books to talk about packing bowls and writing more than 1,000 tobacco reviews for websites such as pipesmagazine.com and pipesmokersforum.com. London Landmarks Made From Recycled Thames Tobacco Pipes

(Londonist.com) Ladies and gentleman, may we present six of London’s most famous landmarks, made from centuries-old clay pipe fragments. The images are the work of artist Amelia Parker. Greetings cards and larger prints are on sale now.
Before we had vapes, before we had cigarettes, before we even had roll-ups, the smokers of London would puff away on disposable clay pipes. Once spent, the pipes were often cast into the Thames, never to be seen again. Or so the smokers might have thought. Continued

Sales explode for Nashville-based cigar company

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Crowned Heads Cigars has exploded on the cigar scene, winning award after award right here in Middle Tennessee.
“The concepts, the ideas, the branding, the graphics all come from this building,” owner Jon Huber explained.
A few years ago as CAO Cigars was packing up and moving out-of-state, Huber decided to stay and branch out on his own, not knowing if his unique style would stick. Continued

Cigar Review: The Buckingham

(Seth's Humidor) In November of 2014, Cigar Federation announced that they would be working with Crowned Heads to release their first site exclusive cigar since Logan Lawler acquired the community in July of the same year. It was an exciting announcement and it came at a great time for both parties involved. Crowned Heads was having a huge 2014 year, and what better way to celebrate the acquirement of Cigar Federation for Lawler then to work with the most popular individual in the industry. Continued

Cigar Review: A.J. Fernandez New World Connecticut Toro

(Cigar Coop) ... Connecticut Shade cigars are not new to A.J. Fernandez Cigars. Most notably, the company has Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrappers with the San Lotano (Réquiem) Connecticut and San Lotan Oval Connecticut lines. Many consider the San Lotano (Réquiem) Connecticut as a game changer as it brought a bolder, spicier Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade cigar to the table. The New World Connecticut is different as it uses a U.S. Connecticut Shade wrapper. It also provides a milder, traditional Connecticut Shade offering - something that hasn't really existed in existing lines. Continued

(Smoking Jacket) Howdy everyone! I hope your day is better than here. It was a great weekend, nice and sunny and warm. Then guess what? The start of this week has been gloomy, cold and windy, with snow flying but not staying in the air. So, what is a better way to at least get a piece of summer that’s coming and not soon enough? So for today’s review and your enjoyment it will be on Sutliff’s Taste of Summer from their Private Stock Collection. Continued

Cigar Review: Parodi by Avanti

(iRobusto) ... The Parodi by Avanti in the Ammezzati size is a 3.5”x34 small cigar with a very rough look to it and an open head. It utilizes Kentucky and Tennessee Dark Fired tobaccos to give it a unique flavor profile.
Off the wrapper, there is a mild leather and musty aroma. The foot gives off a smoky grass smell. On the first light, I pick up flavors of wood and earth mixed with a slight sweetness. The retro-hale gives me coffee, and the finish is short with minimal flavor. Continued

Cigar Review: Long Live The King Lock Stock (Caldwell Cigar Co.)

(Seth's Humidor) ... The newest addition to the Long Live The King line, Lock Stock is a belicoso that measures 5" with a 52 ring gauge. The cigar features a Dominican Corojo wrapper and binder, and the initial batch of cigars sports leafs from 2008 and 2009 respectively. I imagine that they are onto different vintages, but who knows. The filler is a tri-country filler blend, and it features Dominican Corojo Ligero, Nicaraguan Habano Ligero, and Peruvian Pelo De Oro Viso. The percentages are 50%, 40%, and 10% respectively. PDR Cigars Turns Surplus Tobacco Into A Crop Brand

(Cigar Aficionado) If you've ever made a casserole out of last night's perfectly good leftovers, then you'll probably appreciate what Abe Flores, owner of PDR Cigars, has done with his new cigar brand. Flores found himself with so much leftover tobacco from previous production runs that he's made an entire brand out of it. It's called A Crop, and it's a value-priced bundle cigar that uses the surplus tobacco from some of his more expensive lines.
"A lot of times we have to commit to buying more tobacco than we actually need in order to get exactly what we want," Flores said. Continued

(Halfwheel) In October 2014, Nat Sherman announced that a new brand was being added to its list of Nat Sherman Townhouse exclusives, the Panamericana.
Made at Plasencia Cigars in Nicaragua, the cigar was hailed as being “sensationally complex in flavor, achieving great balance by tempering the Costa Rican tobacco’s unique attributes with three different Nicaraguan tobaccos,” by Michael Herklots, vice president of retail and brand development for the company. Ellis tobacco planters stir memories

(Across the Fence) ... The Ellis tobacco planter consisted of a large barrel filled with water, mounted on two large iron wheels. The two “droppers” sat on low iron seats just inches off the ground behind the barrel with their feet stretched out in front of them and resting on foot pegs under the barrel. It was not very comfortable. A board rested on our laps and the tobacco plants were piled on the boards. As the planter went slowly across the field, the shovel or “shoe,” as it was called, located between the two droppers, made a small furrow in the soil. With each click, water filled the hole, and the dropper inserted a plant. Continued

Cigar Review: Ramón Allones Short Perfectos (ER Italy 2014)

(Halfwheel) ... There’s a large amount of sweet cinnamon, salty and floral flavors from the foot of the Short Perfectos. The cold draw is concerning with some twang, but a lot of bitterness and sourness. Behind that there’s some nuttiness, graham cracker and granola, but they are all secondary compared to the unpleasant flavors up front.
Fortunately, the cold draw doesn’t seem to be a sign of things to come. Continued

Gustavus White Portion Snus Review

I've been a fan of Gustavus for many years. I first encountered it back in 2010 when I reviewed Gustavus Original Portion and I've kept some of it in stock ever since. It's a great tasting traditional Swedish Snus that's slightly different from the average "bergamot" taste. I recently found out that Northerner.com began carrying a new Gustavus product - Gustavus White Portion. Continued

Cigar Review: Illusione Fume D'Amour Lagunas

(Seth's Humidor) ... Fume D'Amour comes in four vitola offerings and for this review I went with the smallest offering, Lagunas. The petit corona measures 4 1/4" with a 42 ring gauge and is made in Nicaragua at TABAS. THe blend revolves around the region of Jalapa, and is composed with no ligero tobacco. It is primarily Corojo tobacco, and it is lower priming leaves. This is not the first time he has done this, he did it with the Epernay, and he has done a terrific job with these blends. Continued

Connoisseur's Corner: Pre-Boom Cubans

(Cigar Aficionado) The year 1991 was a fine one for Cuban cigars. Cigars were still being wrapped in tobacco leaves grown from rich Corojo seed, and the pre-boom industry was still in a calmer, unhurried state. Cigars from this year are wonderful smokes, as was the case with this splendid Cohiba Robusto (which sports an old Cohiba band, decorated with dots instead of squares). Despite its age of 24 years, it was full of life and vibrant flavor. Putting it down was nearly impossible. It was a classic, and quite nearly perfect. A second classic was a much younger smoke, a special cigar made exclusively for La Casa del Habano franchises when it was first released. We also took a look at three very different vitolas from the exceptionally large Romeo y Julieta portfolio ranging in age from nine to 24 years. Continued

(Firecured) Lane Limited has another new product out, Captain Black Copper. Says PipesandCigars.com, "This smooth, bite-free blend of rich, nutty Burley, Lane's renowned black Cavendish and some bright flake-cut Virginia has been finished with a warm top-note that delivers a mellow sweetness and an aroma that everyone will love." This is Lane's second newish tobacco, having released Lane Limited Ready-Rubbed, a short while ago. It'll be nice to see something new at the drugstore, especially a ready-rubbed tobacco.

Cigar Review: Ramón Allones Caprichos (ER Spain 2014)

(Halfwheel) ... The reddish brown wrapper is soft and oily to the touch, though it has a very bumpy surface and looks just a touch rough around the edges. There’s some discoloration, blemishes and veins that give this ER a slightly rustic look. There is a slight bit of give when squeezed, but nothing overly soft. The aroma off the wrapper is almost nonexistent, just some very light hay and earthiness. The cold draw is thankfully more involved, though it’s quite a soft profile of creamy cedar, vanilla and hints of fresh hay. Continued

Giving Up the Ghost

(Talking Tobacco) I get a lot of requests from understandably misty eyed nostalgics for current day matches to long gone blends of the Bygone Era. Of course, how far the era has gone by depends on how long ago you went through that formative age of pipe smoking. Usually, it would involve remembrances of trips to the local shops, sniffing through tobacco jars, looking over tempting tins, and finally making a carefully frugal choice; anything from a trusted favorite to a risky spin of the wheel. (Cigar Coop) Racks on Racks is a shop exclusive to the Cigar Federation store offered by Lost & Found Cigars. Lost & Found is a venture that was founded by Tony Bellatto, Robert Caldwell, and Jaclyn Sears. The company quietly launched in 2014 originally under the name, "Impromptu Cigars". Lane Limited Ready-Rubbed: Return of a Legend

(Pipes Magazine) ... That’s correct: Leonard Wortzel and company have heard the pleas of the common-man cognoscenti and revived the legacy of one of the all-time greats of OTC burleys with their answer to the fabled Edgeworth ready-rubbed. It doesn’t carry the name of its antecedent due to the legal disincentive of pursuing copyright and trademark, but it is the same recipe and it certainly embodies the spirit of that erstwhile blend. That it carries the moniker of Lane Limited Ready-Rubbed should be no discouragement, and perhaps be a better thing in the grander scheme for establishing its own legacy in time. Continued

Balkan Sobranie: The Perfumed Memory

(At the back of the hill) ... Balkan Sobranie, however, is the subject of memories made golden and more diverse with each passing year. For the very simple reason that there is nothing quite like it, in a field awash with very similar tobacco mixtures.
It was invented a century ago by a fervid political activist from Odessa, who after spending time in Czarist jails and being contentious during the Bulgarian question, bailed out to England and became a tobacco company representative. Initially he commissioned a line of cigarettes featuring Balkan leaf, eventually he had built up enough relations with tobacco brokers and retailers that he devoted his energies solely to the company he had started. Cigar Review: Inca Secret Blend Tambo

(Halfwheel) Originally launched in 2012 by Mitchell Orchant, the managing director of C. Gars Ltd in the U.K., Inka Secret Blend Cigars are Peruvian puros that are produced at Tabacalera del Oriente in Peru. According to the company, each cigar is made with 100 percent Peruvian tobacco that has been aged for a minimum of at least three years.
“It’s the kind of cigar that leaves me wanting to smoke another one immediately as it doesn’t blow your palate out with strength,” said Orchant. “…very little salt, enough acidity, no bitterness and plenty of sweetness.”
Last month, Orchant announced that after three years, the Inka brand has become his best-selling non-Cuban brand, and that he would be offering the cigars to the U.S. market for the first time, albeit under the slightly different name of Inca Cigars. Continued

Pipe Tobacco Review: Seattle Pipe Club’s Deception Pass

(Pipes Magazine) ... Flakes, plugs, and cakes seem to have dominated pipe tobacco world these past couple of years. They’re wonderful, of course, and pressure does things to the tobacco that can’t be replicated by other means. But it is nonetheless refreshing to open the tin and be greeted by a fluffy full two ounces of proper ribbon cut leaf—the ease of packing, tactile sensation and sheer flexibility of a good ribbon is not to be underestimated. The tin notes English style Virginias, Acadian Perique, Black Virginia, Black Cavendish, and a touch of Turkish Orientals, all of which can be easily discerned in the jumble of leaf, particularly the sprinkling of olive-colored strands of Izmir.
