(Winston-Salem Journal) The former R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. headquarters officially can be touted as “historic” after being approved for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.
The registry placed the 22-story building on the list Aug. 19. It has served as downtown Winston-Salem's architectural signature for 85 years, being referred to as “the grand old lady” by Mayor Allen Joines.
The former headquarters debuted in 1929 as the tallest building between Baltimore and Miami and quickly became a landmark of the industrial South. Continued
