Here's a picture of the tobacco counter at People's Drug Store (Washington D.C.), taken sometime between "1909 - 1932." It's hard to imagine a time when a drugstore featured so many varieties of tobacco. Brands pictured in the photo include Prince Albert, Central Union Cut Plug, Union Leader Cut Plug, Sensation Smoking Tobacco, Edgeworth Extra High Grade Ready Rubbed, and Admiration. Cigarette brands include Fatima, Murad, and Egyptian Deities - all Turkish blends. Cigars include Robert Burns, Muriel, Manuel, Sino, etc.
I have made the photo as large as Blogger will allow, but you can see it much larger at the Library of Congress website: click here and enter "peoples drug tobacco" as your search terms.
