The History and Mystery of Puffing



"DEDICATED TO THE WHOLE SMOKING FRATERNITY,
From the ragged young loafer,'who, among the motley crowd, inhales his spurious pennyworth, by stealth and stratagem, to the exquisite, who luxuriates in indolent ease over the rich aroma of his choice regalia of the most recherche, brand. "We are thus particular in defining the character of our patrons, to prevent enveloping the subject in a cloudy obscurity, by allowing the supposition that all smoakers or puffers, are the avowed objects of our emulous regard—which is not strictly true ; par example—we do not include the fumigations of faulty chimneys, the smoking intensity of a tropical sun, or the less objectionable, because not inodorous, fumes of a smoking sirloin, although the latter has more affinity to the palate than the olfactories. To all honest, good hearted, generous puffers, of every rank and degree, from the puffers of cigars, to those of hoarhound candy, patent pills, and every other imaginable commodity, we respectfully inscribe the following " whiffs," exuded from our wizard weed."
