Tie up to London Dock

Aging perique (Library of Congress)
(Pappy's Tobacco Reviews) First off, the label reads: “An aromatic blend with sensuous flavor notes of rum, cherry and vanilla. Premium Double Toasted Barley, Flue Cured Virginias, and naturally sweet Orientals marry exquisitely with a touch of spicy Louisiana Perique.” Continued

Cigars In The Movies

(Cigar Aficionado) What is the most indelible cigar image from the movies? That depends on how you judge. Does it belong to the actor whose screen image is most closely associated with cigars?
The obvious answer then is Groucho Marx, who made his cigar an almost inseparable part of his persona—first on film, then on television and in real life.
Then again, it could belong to Clint Eastwood. Continued

Cigar Review: Crowned Heads Juarez 4 3/4 x 52

(Cigar Coop) … Flavor-wise, Crowned Heads Juarez is not your cookie-cutter Mexican San Andres offering. It’s quite different than many of the ones I’ve smoked, and that’s a positive. It definitely provided a smoother smoke than your typical San Andres offering, and brought a nice balance of sweetness and spice to the forefront. Continued

Stem Repairs and a Good Cleaning for a Handsome Earl’s Court Silver Mount Prince

(Dad's Pipes) Every now and again I come across a pipe about which I can find no information. This Earl’s Court Prince is one such mystery. All of my searching has turned up exactly zilch, zip, zero – rather frustrating, especially as it is a well-made pipe with some years on it.
This series of pictures show the pipe as it looked when I first brought it to the worktable. Continued

Black Label Trading Co. Deliverance Porcelain Corona Gorda Review

(Halfwheel) … For one of its most recent additions to its Deliverance line, Black Label Trading Co. decided to go in a direction that is seemingly a bit different from the company’s signature style of full-bodied, full strength cigars by giving the new blend a Connecticut wrapper over a Nicaraguan habano binder with fillers coming from Nicaragua and Pennsylvania. Rallarsnus Returns

(Snubie) Swedish Match has brought back another classic taste from the dead - Rallarsnus! This was a product made from 1976 to 2006.
At the end of last year, Swedish Match brought back Mörkbrunt Lös for a limited period of time, and, from what I've heard, they're going to be resurrecting more of their classic brands in the coming months, as well! Continued

Zimbabwe Expects 200 Million Kg of Tobacco

(AllAfrica.com) Zimbabwe's tobacco output is expected to decline to 200 million kilogrammes this year owing to unfavourable weather conditions under which the crop was grown, the industry regulator has said.
Last year, the country produced an all-time high of 252 million kilogrammes of tobacco, earning at least a billion dollars in revenue. Continued

Seven Fine Cigars For $7 Or Less

(Cigar Aficionado) It can be difficult to track down a good bargain in your local cigar shop, especially when you tack on both federal and state taxes to the final price. Nonetheless, there are still many cigars out there on the market that are excellent in quality, but won’t break the bank.
In the last three months, between Cigar Aficionado and Cigar Insider tastings, we’ve reviewed a total of 131 cigars. We analyzed those ratings to find the best bangs for the buck among them, the top value-priced smokes that deserve your attention. Continued

Knox Dark (Original Portion) Snus Review

(Snubie) I don't think I've ever had more requests to review a product than I have with this one, so, today we're talking about Knox Dark, a new product from Skruf!
I think this is a smart release by Skruf, for a few reasons. First, Skruf doesn't have a tobacco-centric product to compete with Grov. Second, Knox is incredibly popular, so it makes sense to launch this flavor in the Knox range. Continued

Early Season Reports from the Field

(Tobacco Farmer Newsletter) Seeding in western Kentucky was held up in some greenhouses by a cold snap in March. Alec Bradley Value-Priced Project 40 Shipping in May

(Cigar Aficionado) Alec Bradley has announced Project 40, a new value-priced brand that will begin to ship globally in mid-May.
Project 40 was inspired by the popular research-based initiative of the same name that focuses on building resiliency and helping people take control of their happiness. According to believers in Project 40, 50 percent of one’s happiness stems from genetics while 10 percent is based on circumstance. According to the initiative, the other 40 percent is said to be controlled by one’s own mindset, and can be fulfilled through outlets such as leadership, creativity, physical well-being and financial success. Cigar Review: Davidoff – The Master Selection 2007

(Cigar Coop) … The cigar experience of the Davidoff Master Selection 2007 cigar commenced with a straight cut. Once the cap was removed, it was time for the pre-light draw ritual.
The cold draw delivered a mix of earth and natural tobacco as well as touches of citrus and cocoa. This was a very good pre-light draw.
At this point, it was time to light up the Davidoff Master Selection 2007 and see what the smoking phase would have in store. Continued

Lundgrens Västkusten Vit Snus Review

(Snubie) Lundgrens Västkusten is a semi-new product from Fiedler and Lundgren. I say "semi-new" because it's basically the same thing as Lundgren's Marstrand, which was a limited edition product I reviewed back in 2018.
Västkusten means "west coast," so this product is one that corresponds with that region of Sweden. Continued

Cigar Review: Casa de Garcia Connecticut

(Cigar Masters) … Offering a fair amount of cigar for your money, the Casa de Garcia Churchill Connecticut measures just over 6 inches long with a 50 gauge ring, a nice fat smoke that can last upwards of an hour and a half. Great for long, lazy mornings when you want something smooth to wake you up. Continued

Satisfied, Maybe

(A Hobby, Not a Habit) Part of what accounts for the well-remarked-on pipe-acquisition disorder (PAD) and tobacco-acquisition disorder (TAD) is the all-too-human (I think) proclivity to value what we have less than what we are yet to have.
I have way too much opened tobacco, each blend of which I was excited to acquire — only to find that I was much less excited once it became part of my stash. Continued

Brick House Maduro Short Torpedo Review

(Halfwheel) … I've long maintained that the Brick House line is one of the best bang-for-you-buck cigars on the market, and I'd continue to make that claim after smoking three of the Brick House Maduro Short Torpedo. Continued

Factory Smokes Maduro by Drew Estate Toro

(Cigar Dojo) A sub-two-dollar cigar; it’s a style few thought would ever come out of the revered La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate factory, even when taking into account the tin-packaged cigars that began making their way to retailers in 2017.
Drew Estate has made it known that the company opposes the “factory seconds” style sometimes released by other factories—that is, offering cigars that didn’t meet quality standards for regular-production brands at discounted prices.
But this mindset doesn’t, however, extend into the category of “bundle cigars,” as Drew Estate debuted a line of four cigars in 2018, intended to offer consumers an extreme value, while maintaining Drew Estate’s unorthodox flair. Continued

Shift in Nicotine Use Is Putting Pressure on Cigarette Segment

(CSN) … However, retailers' outlook for cigarette volume in 2019 "has decelerated significantly" as dual usage and smoker conversion to e-vapor products like Juul has accelerated, explained Bonnie Herzog, managing director of tobacco, beverage and convenience store research at Wells Fargo Securities. Agile Cigar Review: Nat Sherman Timeless Sterling Short Robusto

(Cigar Coop) … Available in ten-count boxes, the Timeless Sterling Short Robusto has the thickest ring gauge (52) and along with the Perlas size, it is the shortest vitola in the series (4″).
The Short Robusto size was not a part of the original 2013 launch, but was added into the collection in 2015.
As for the blend, it consists of an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper over Dominican binder and filler. Production is handled out of the Quesada factory in the Dominican Republic. Continued

Thunder NRG (White Dry) Chew Bags Review

(Snubie) … I reviewed the snus version of this product back in 2017, so it's been a little while since I've tasted an NRG product. I was interested to see how close this stuff is to the snus version. This product is "energy drink" flavored, which you don't see much of. Continued

Trump Administration Levels Punitive New Sanctions On Cuba, Plans To Restrict Travel

(Cigar Aficionado) The Trump administration today announced sweeping new sanctions against Cuba, taking a major step toward fully dismantling the policy of engagement initiated during the Obama administration and signaling U.S. intentions to foster regime change on the island.
The changes will severely restrict the ability of Americans to travel to the island, limit the amount of funds people can send to relatives in Cuba and also open the door to lawsuits against companies doing business with Cuba. Continued

Declining Tobacco Production in Tanzania

(VapingPost) … Speaking at a meeting convened to discuss ways of reviving production of the crop and looking for new markets, Mnozya said production of tobacco declined from 105 million kilograms in 2013/2014 to 93 million kilograms in 2014/2015.
He added that the production of the crop decreased from 72 million kilograms in 2015/2016, to 60 kilograms in 2016/2017 and to further 50.5 million kilograms in 2017/2018. Continued

Review: Cigars and More El Segundo, Los Angeles

(Cigar Aficionado) Location, location, location. It’s true for restaurants and, in the case of Cigars and More of El Segundo, it’s true of cigar lounges. Cigars and More is perfectly located just south of Los Angeles International Airport, a.k.a. a major traffic jam.

British American Tobacco: Opportunities Like This Don't Come Often

(Seeking Alpha) British American Tobacco’s torrid 2018 (Down 49% on the LSE) may have created a once in a lifetime opportunity for entry into this high quality company.
Despite a modest 21% bounce in the shares this year, the shares are well off 2017 highs (Current share price is 56% of the all-time high), and still very attractive on valuation metrics, with a number of potential earnings catalysts on the horizon. Continued

With vaping under fire, tobacco-free snuff latest alternative to help smokers quit

(USA Today) As federal regulators and state legislators race to restrict electronic cigarettes – the most effective means to quit smoking – at least two other companies are introducing alternatives that involve nicotine without the need to inhale.
Vaping, the most criticized smoking cessation option, will have a version of tobacco-free snuff to compete with starting this month. At the same time, the makers of Camel cigarettes are bringing back dissolvable nicotine lozenges.
Swedish Match's Zyn, a flavored nicotine powder packet designed to be stuck inside a person's lip, will be in stores across the U.S. after successful distribution in 11 states. Continued

Snubie Cherokee Rose (Lös) Snus Preview

(Snubie) May of 2019 marks the 10 year anniversary of Snubie.com. This year, I wanted to do something special, so I've partnered with our friends at Snus.biz to release a special Snubie.com product. Meet Snubie 10 Year: Cherokee Rose!
… For this product, Burley, Black Cavendish, and Perique tobaccos were used. Perique is one of my favorite tobaccos and provides a tangy, zesty element to the flavor to compliment the mild, soft, nutty flavor of the Burley and the mellow flavor of the Black Cavendish. Continued

Plasencia Cosecha 146 La Vega Review

(Cigar Dojo) … With Cosecha 146, this particular release is based on a specific crop season, as Cosecha is the Spanish word for harvest. The 146 recognizes the 146th anniversary of the Plasencia’s first crop, harvested in Cuba in 1865.
This cigar consists entirely of Criollo ’98, grown on the Plasencia’s farms in Honduras and Nicaragua during the 2011-’12 crop year. Says Nestor Plasencia, CEO of Plasencia Cigars, “We choose the 2011–2012 crop for its excellent yield in terms of quality in all the areas where the tobaccos in the blend were grown. The weather was great to us.” Continued

Cigar Review: Tabernacle Havana Seed CT No. 142 Toro by Foundation Cigar Company

(Cigar Coop) As mentioned the Havana Seed #142 wrapper of the Tabernacle Havana Seed No. 142 is grown in Connecticut.
Since 2014, Melillo worked with farmers in the Connecticut River Valley on the plants produced by that seed. This seed was developed by combining the Havana Seed #38 with Havana Seed #1207 (also called Page-Comstock).
In addition, there was an extended fermentation process used on the leaf grown from the Havana Seed #142 wrapper.
The remainder of the blend consists of a San Andres binder and a combination of Nicaraguan and Honduran tobaccos. Continued

5 Questions with Drew Newman

Newman's first factory, 1895 (J.C. Newman)
(Tobacconist Magazine) You represent the fourth generation of your family’s cigar company. What’s it like growing up in the tobacco industry?

It is a real privilege being able to build on the legacy that my great-grandfather started 123 years ago. He passed the business down to my grandfather who then passed it on to my father and uncle who are passing it on to my cousins and me.
Growing up in our family business, conversations about the cigar industry were present at every family gathering, whether it be the Thanksgiving dinner table or a birthday celebration. Continued

Review: Punch Egg Roll

(Halfwheel) If you’ve ever ordered Chinese take-out, you’ve got a pretty good idea where General Cigar Co. got the inspiration for its latest addition to its Punch brand, the Punch Egg Roll.
This limited edition 4 1/2 x 50 Rothschild vitola comes with a shaggy, unwrapped foot that is supposed to mimic the cabbage texture you get when biting into an actual egg roll, the company said when announcing the cigar.
Fear not, there is no cabbage in the actual cigar, as the fillers from Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and the United States, while the binder is an Ecuadorian Sumatra leaf and the wrapper is Connecticut broadleaf. Continued

Oriental Opulence part 1.

(Dutch Pipe Smoker) Oriental tobaccos always held and still hold some kind of mystery for me. When I ventured into the realm of the dark leaf latakia (also an oriental but hung in smoke), one of my first blends was Balkan Supreme. The word “Balkan” already made me dream of wonderful tobaccos harvested in far away exotic countries.
Of course when you are beginning your search for the oriental leaf you very soon stumble upon one of the most legendary mixtures ever: Balkan Sobranie Smoking Mixture. Written at the bottom of the old tins was: “blended with the finest Yenidje tobacco”. I had nooo idea what the hell Yenidje was but it sounded damn cool!
So I started searching for information about Yenidje and soon discovered that it was an oriental tobacco. And that there were many more of them. Continued

Partagas Legend Corona Extra Leyenda Review

(Cigar Dojo) … Partagas Legend’s blend is unique in that each of the tobaccos used are significant to the Partagas brand’s history (post-Cuba).
This is accomplished through the use of Dominican Piloto Cubano filler leaves (said to be among General Cigar’s finest aged tobaccos), a Honduran Olancho San Agustin binder, and a USA-grown Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper.
The cigars have been rolled in three box-pressed formats, being priced notably higher than anything within the brand’s current lineup. Continued

Cigar Pairing: Ommegang’s For The Throne Is Also For Your Cigar

(Cigar Aficionado) Just in time for Sunday’s season eight premiere, Ommegang and HBO have launched For The Throne, their newest “Game of Thrones”-inspired beer. The fifth release in the collaboration series, For The Throne is a beer-wine hybrid that was partially fermented with pinot grigio and viognier grape juices.
So should you reach for a goblet or a horn to fill up with this fine brew? Well, neither because we don’t actually live in Westeros and that would just be silly. One thing is for certain: You’ll want to grab a great handmade cigar to fire up with For The Throne. Continued

Cigar Review: Brick House Double Connecticut Toro by J.C. Newman Cigar Company

(Cigar Coop) … Brick House is a brand that can be traced back to 1937. It was a Cuban puro produced by company founder Julius Caeser Newman to honor his childhood home – which was a brick house in a small Hungarian village. Once the Cuban embargo was imposed it no longer became possible to make a Cuban puro, and the Brick House would be no more.
Fast forward to 2009, and Newman’s grandsons Bobby and Eric Newman worked to bring back the Brick House brand – this time using Nicaraguan tobaccos. Continued

Viaje Exclusivo Nicaragua Leaded Corona Gorda Edición Limitada Review

(Halfwheel) … There’s rarely been a Viaje Exclusivo that I haven’t enjoyed, and the Viaje Exclusivo Nicaragua Leaded Corona Gorda Edición Limitada is no exception to that trend.
As I mentioned above, there was little that I thought could be added to the original Exclusivo to make it a better cigar, but it is interesting to see how this new extension takes the blend in a slightly different direction. Continued

Cigar-Smoking Steakhouse Owner Changes The Law

(Cigar Aficionado) Recently the city council of Frisco, Texas, just 20 miles north of Dallas, voted unanimously to pass an ordinance allowing restaurants to have smoking rooms and cigar lounges.
Leading this undertaking was Dee Lincoln, owner of Dee Lincoln Prime steakhouse.
Lincoln, an occasional cigar smoker who is sometimes known as the “Queen of Steaks,” now plans to open a cigar lounge adjacent to her restaurant called Havana Dee’s. Continued

Like a Fine Tobacco, the Pipe Smoking Revival Has Been a Slow Burn

(Collectors Weekly) … Unlike napkins, diamonds, and golfing—traditions that Millennials have supposedly “killed”—pipe smoking is very much alive.
In 2014, ABC News postulated that younger smokers and collectors were bringing pipe smoking, a hobby reminiscent of great-uncles and blazered villains of ’80s teen comedies, back into fashion.
Nearly five years later, it’s largely agreed that pipe smoking’s youthquake hasn’t saved the industry or the hobby, either, but it has changed how pipe smoking appears in our minds: It’s unlikely that the image of an American smoking a pipe will be only associated with the dark-wooded dens of men in retirement ever again. My Father La Opulencia Robusto Review

(Cigar Dojo) While not making it into Cigar Dojo’s top 10 list for 2018 (although the My Father La Gran Oferta was our No. 8), My Father La Opulencia—the company’s 2017 offering—did take home the silver from Cigar Aficionado, claiming the magazine’s No. 2 Cigar of the Year award.
No stranger to accolades and awards, the García family (owners of the My Father Cigars brand) has been pumping out acclaimed cigars since they created their small factory/store-front (complete with only a handful of rollers) in Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood, circa 2003. Continued
